Getting started

On first launch, SolvePhotos asks where to keep its library. Choose the suggested folder in Pictures, or another folder. If your photos are on an external drive, allow the whole drive so every folder on it works after a restart. Then choose Import on the dock to add a folder of photos.

Common questions

Does SolvePhotos change my photos?

No. Edits are kept in the library and applied when you view or export. Your originals are never changed. Sidecar files beside your photos are written only if you turn that on.

Where is my library?

Where you chose on first launch: the suggested folder in Pictures, or another folder. It holds your edits, presets and thumbnails. Your photos stay in their own folders unless you chose to copy them into the library when you imported them.

A folder shows as offline.

The drive it is on is not connected, or SolvePhotos no longer has permission for it. Connect the drive, or open Settings ▸ Drives and folders and add it again.

Can I bring in my existing catalogue?

Yes. Choose Import and pick your catalogue file. SolvePhotos reads it without changing it, and asks once for each folder its photos live in. Edits from other photo apps, in their catalogues or XMP files, come across too, read only and mapped to the nearest SolvePhotos tools.

How do I turn on face recognition?

Settings ▸ Faces. The face recognition model downloads the first time you switch it on, and everything runs on your Mac.

Why does SolvePhotos download things?

Two features need a file that is not inside the app: face recognition, and place names for Fill Location from GPS. The depth model and the AI masks are built in. Each file downloads only the first time you ask for it, is checked before use, and then works on your Mac without the internet. Nothing about you or your photos is sent.

Why does SolvePhotos offer to download place names?

To fill in place names for your photos from their GPS positions, it needs a table of place names. It downloads that table once, only when you ask, and then looks places up on your Mac.

Where are my exports?

In Pictures ▸ SolvePhotos Exports, unless you chose another folder.

Which Macs does SolvePhotos run on?

Macs with Apple silicon or Intel, running macOS 13 Ventura or later.

Purchases and refunds

SolvePhotos is sold through the Mac App Store, so Apple handles payments and refunds. To ask for a refund, use Apple's Report a Problem page.
